Our Story

Lewis Wines was established in 2010 by friends Doug Lewis and Duncan Mcnabb. Understanding that great wine is made in the vineyard, we use 100% Texas grapes with a focus on soil health, vine health and quality grapes. Our goal is to remain invisible in the cellar, producing age-worthy wines that showcase the vintage, vineyard and farming.

Our property is located just west of Johnson City in the Pedernales River Basin where we grow Tourgia Nacional, Tinto Cao, Tannat and Alicante Bouschet. We planted in 2014, and our small crew tends these vines year-round. We farm without the use of herbicides, with a focus on soil health by planting seasonal cover crops, applying compost and allowing our sheep and chicken to graze the vineyards.

We also source grapes throughout the state of Texas, primarily from the Hill Country and High Plains AVAs. Through thoughtful farming on our estate and closely partnering with our grape growers, Lewis Wines' endeavor is to produce wines that truly highlight the taste- or terroir- of the many diverse microclimates under cultivation in the state of Texas today.

Meet the Team

Doug Lewis, Co-Owner & Winemaker
A Texas native from Elgin, Doug began working with Pedernales Cellars in the 2009 vintage while finishing a business degree at St. Edwards University.   During harvest in 2010, Doug began a small side project with some of the extra fruit from 2010's abundant harvest.  During that time, Doug and Duncan founded Lewis Wines, started planting vines with a couple growers across the state, began sourcing fruit for the 2011 vintage, and starting looking for an ideal property to build a winery and later plant vines.

Duncan McNabb, Co-owner & Winemaker
Duncan grew up all over the US in a military family, and is an avid soccer player and moved to Texas in 2008. Duncan met Doug in 2008 playing soccer, then got his start working at Pedernales Cellars during harvest in 2010.  Duncan and Doug were roommates while Duncan was finishing up college at Texas State University, and in 2010 decided to help found Lewis Wines.   Duncan's degrees in Mathematics and Chemistry provided him with an excellent foundation to learn wine making.
